75 years ago, 3-tab oxidized asphalt shingles dominated the residential housing market. In the 1970’s, the laminated shingle design came out. Those designs have their flaws, mainly with granule loss and a life span of 8-20 years, regardless of what the warranty says.

When we founded  Modern Roof, we didn’t want to be just another roofing company, but rather a company that would set the trend in new technology.  When we found Malarkey Roofing Shingles, we knew we had a distinguishing factor that would set up apart from other roofing companies.  

We offer a variety of roofing products, but it all started here — distinguishing ourselves as a leading-edge roofing company with this new type of asphalt shingle. 

We can install any brand of shingle on the market – Owens Corning, Certainteed, GAF, IKO, Atlas, or others. But the only time we do is when we are doing a partial roof or a repair and we have to match what is one the rest of the roof. Given a choice, we’re going to promote Malarkey Roofing Shingles. They align with us and our company direction to be Modern.

Malarkey Roofing Shingles are Polymer-modified (some refer to it as SBS-modified). They combine recycled rubber and plastics into the asphalt in the manufacturing process. This makes the shingle remain pliable so it can retain the granules longer. Do you ever see granules in the gutter? Many brands will suffer extreme granule loss even in the first 5 years, exposing more of the asphalt, which dries out, and becomes brittle and goes end of life. Malarkey polymer-modified shingles retain the granules for many years and are more impact resistant than other shingles which is why they last longer. 

What about the environmental impact of shingles? Imagine most shingles that are removed from your house will end up in the landfill. Recycled shingles can be ground up and used in asphalt road products. Malarkey goes one step further by recycling tires and plastic bags, keeping those items out of the landfills. They use 3M granules that help reduce smog and their algae-resistant (no more black streaks down your roof). 

Malarkey Roofing ONLY manufactures architectural shingles, or laminated shingles.  The Highlander series is Class 3.  The Vista, Legacy and Windsor are all Class 4.  Laminated shingles, in general, are thicker and are mor durable than 3-tab shingles. Malarkey goes further in their design by making the transition in the shingle smoother to prevent nails from going through the material and they have a wider nailing area.  The Laminated shingles tend to look better than the older 3-tab to most people. 

Most competitors have one SBS-modified shingle that is their premium shingle. Read their websites – they all say that the SBS-modified offering is better than their standard asphalt shingle.  Malarkey has 4 grades of polymer-modified shingles.  The Windsor has a unique look to the shingle.  The Legacy is a super thick game changer.   Of the traditional laminated shingle design, the Legacy version is the best-in-class, bar none.  Even the Vista is a true Class 4 shingle that is better than most every other shingle on the market.  Class 4 shingles should get you insurance premium discounts because your insurance company realizes how impact resistant they are. 

We’ve mentioned Impact Resistance Shingles multiple times already.  Highlander is Class 3.  Vista, Legacy and Windsor are all Class 4, the highest class of shingle.  These Classes are designed to test impact resistance.  The higher the class, the less damage is expected from a hail event.

Asphalt Shingles remain the majority of the market share in residential roofing. Malarkey is leading the transition from oxidized asphalt shingles to polymer-modified shingles and there are huge advantages to the Malarkey shingles. But in general, asphalt shingles are
