What’s Modern about Gutters
Gutters were invented in the late 1800’s. They were typically sections that were fastened together to create a trough around the perimeter of the roof. Copper became the material of choice as it’s a soft metal that is easily malleable and can be soldered at the joints. Galvanized steel was also used as a more cost effective solution as time went on. Eventually, aluminum became the industry standard due to it’s ease of use and it’s effectiveness against corrosion. Gutters were created most often by fastening 10 foot sections together and caulking the seams around the roof. The miters were factory-manufactured pieces that were attached to the main gutter pieces, creating another seam. In the early 1960’s, Art Knudson invented a machine that could cut gutters from aluminum in one seamless piece. The portable machines became popular in the 1970’s and 1980’s so that gutter installers could make a one-piece gutter section on-site. And not, the industry standard is to even hand-cut miters on-site so there is only 1 single seam in the ends of each piece at the miter. Some installers shy away from hand-cut miters even today and use pre-made miters or smaller miter strips. Gutter fastener systems have also come a long way. In the 1980’s, we were using fascia brackets to sit the gutters in and strap over the top. These are very secure and easy to install with one installer, but the create visual lines every 3 feet on the front of the gutter. Spike and Ferrule fastening systems consists of a hollow aluminum tube inside the gutter and a spike, or nail, going all the way through the front of the gutter, through the ferrule, and the back of the gutter. Cosmetically, you see the head of the spike on the front of the gutter about every 3 feet or so. Most gutter installers have evolved to use hidden gutter hanging systems on gutters today. Gutter hangers clip on the inside front of the gutter and over the top of the back of the gutter and then a screw is driven through the back of the gutter and into the fascia. Most installers will space the hangers every 2-3 feet.

The best aluminum gutters are seamless and the miters, both inside and outside, are hand-cut. The fasteners are all hidden so there are no exposed nails, or spikes, in the front of the gutter. Copper can still be made in various shapes and bent to match custom areas in individual pieces and then put together on-site. The seams are permanently soldered so leaks are not likely. Many consider this an old craftsman technique and enjoy the aesthetics.
Copper can also be used with the standard portable seamless gutter machines as shown here to create the traditional “K-style” gutter profile.
